DMC Threads: A Beginner’s Guide

Almost every cross-stitch chart lists its colours as DMC numbers. Here is what that means and how to shop for thread without over-buying.

What is DMC floss?

DMC is a standard range of six-strand cotton embroidery floss, identified by a code like 310 (black) or 3799 (dark grey). Because the range is standard, a chart can tell you exactly which threads to buy.

How many strands?

Floss comes as six strands loosely twisted together. For cross stitch you usually separate out two strands for full crosses on 14- and 16-count Aida, and one strand for backstitch outlines. Using more strands gives fuller coverage; fewer gives a lighter, finer look.

Reading a thread list

A good chart's legend shows, per colour:

• the DMC code and name,
• a symbol used on the chart,
• the stitch count, and
• how many skeins to buy.

One 8-metre skein goes a long way, so the "skeins to buy" number is usually small — round up per colour and you will not run out mid-project.
